Happy New Year! I hope everyone's 2019 is off to a great start. We are working hard here in 4G. Our division unit is coming to a end and I am so impressed with how well the whole class has been doing. We will be starting fractions next week and continuing the topic over the next few weeks.
In writing we recently began our informational writing unit. Each student has chosen a topic that he/she feels to be an "expert" on. They have the opportunity to do a little bit of research, but are primarily writing about their topic based on what they already know. Some of the topics chosen are: Hogwarts, Word War II, sea otters, baking, slime, and pandas. The class is having a lot of fun with this unit! As you can see, all snow day information is located right on our website. The assignments will be updated when we have a snow day in order to make sure the work aligns with what we are doing in the classroom. Have a wonderful week! . Last week, we had the pleasure of listening to 3 parents speak about their immigration experiences. The whole fourth grade gathered together and asked many meaningful questions, making a lot of connections to our social studies unit. It was so much fun. We would like to give a special thank you to the parents who visited and told their immigration stories to our classes!
We are almost 2 months into the school year and our class has been working so hard! In math, we are beginning our unit on addition and subtraction. We have been spending a lot of time completing DICE problems and are working on explaining our answers. In ELA, we are on our second unit in Reading Street. We have been learning how to write fourth grade responses to our weekly questions and have had the opportunity to do a lot of our typing on the Chromebooks. Last week, we had our flashlight reading. The class absolutely loved this! We are working on earning our next reward, which will likely happen in the next few weeks. I am in the process of sending out a sign up sheet for fall conferences via Sign Up Genius, so please be on the look at for this. It will come directly to your email. I hope everyone is having a fantastic fall! Our first 3 weeks of school have been incredible! We are beginning to get into our routines and have started a lot of academic work. In writing, we are beginning to work on our narratives. The students have just chosen a "small moment" to write about and we are working on how to add sensory details. In math, we are already wrapping up topic one (multiplication review) and we will have our assessment next week. Every single student has been working so hard!
This week, we focused on team building and did a couple of very fun activities. In our first, the class was split up into small groups and they had to build the highest tower possible that would stand on it's own with 20 Popsicle sticks and clay. It was a challenge, but every single group took it on. They persevered, communicated and worked together. Our second activity was called the human knot. Ask your child to explain this one! We have begun our rotations for Science, Social Studies and Engineering. In Social Studies, we started our first unit on Immigration. Many of you may have seen the homework assignment. The class is very excited to learn more about the history of their families. I hope to meet many of you at the open house next week! .Sincerely, Mrs. Graham Welcome back to the 2018-2019 school year! Our class has had a wonderful start to the school year and I am so excited to have so many smiling faces here in 4G!
We have had an excellent first two days of school. We've spent much of the time getting to know one another, talking about our expectations and having fun as a new class. We will begin some academics next week, but will still be practicing routines and getting to know the classroom. We started reading the book "Wonder" and while many of our class has read the book and seen the movie, we were all excited to read it again! It is one of my favorite books, even as an adult. Next week, we will be decorating our writer's notebooks. If all students could bring in any pictures, stickers, or decorations to put on their notebook, that would be great. This allows them to express themselves and have a little more fun with their writing. I will be sending home scholastic book orders next week. Our class code is Q962R. This allows you to pay for your order online. The orders will be due by 9/14. Thank you so much for all of the supplies that were generously donated to the classroom. I greatly appreciate it! I am confident that we are going to have a very successful year and I cannot wait to watch our class grow as the fall continues. -Mrs. Graham Wow, March seems to be flying by here in 4G! With all of the recent snow days, our schedule has been a bit off, but the class is working hard and everyone did an excellent job completing their snow day work.
In math we are working on fractions. This week we learned how to convert fractions to decimals. In ELA, we have been learning about expeditions. Our question of the week was "What surprises can happen on an expedition?" Next week, we are going to learn about poetry and looking for themes in a story. Please make sure your child is completing his/her home writing journal which is due every monday and 100 IXL problems, due every Friday. Thank you and have an excellent weekend! 4G has been up to a lot of great things the last few weeks! Here is a quick update...
Math: We are beginning our work with fractions and we will be spending a lot of time over the next couple weeks on this topic. The class is very excited and eager to learn more. ELA: This week, the class is reading a story about Navajo Code Talkers. It ties in a lot of great information about Native Americans and World War I. We have been talking a lot about kindness over the last couple of months. Specifically, random acts of kindness. We are creating a kindness paper chain. Students can fill out a link in the chain anytime they complete a random act of kindness. Our goal is to have the chain loop around the classroom by the end of the school year! This week we started our Imaginative Narrative unit in writing. The class is very excited! We have been reading various stories and talking about the elements of imaginative writing. Today, we listened to a podcast called "Story Pirates". Children submit their own stories to the podcast and then they are performed on episodes of Story Pirates.
The class absolutely loved the podcast! At the end of the episode, the following prompt was announced: "Kids, write a story from your imagination about a brand new holiday. Tell us who celebrates it and how they celebrate it! Since this is a totally made up holiday, you can be as silly as you want!" Story Pirates would love for students to submit their responses to the prompt. If you and your child are interested, click here. They are having a lot of fun responding to this prompt and really enjoyed listening to the podcast! In ELA this week, we are talking about teamwork. We've been focusing on the question "How can we work together to accomplish a goal?". There have been some great discussions in our classroom about teamwork!
In Math, we took our topic 3 test today on place value. Tomorrow, we will begin topic 4: addition and subtraction of whole numbers. Please make sure your child is working on addition and subtraction on IXL, as this will help with what we are doing in class! In writing, we have been working on personal narratives. This week and next, we will be writing about a moment when we were thankful for something. I can wait to hear what the students come up with! Who Wants to be a Fourth Grade Guest Speaker?
In the past, we have had parents, grandparents, older siblings, aunts, and uncles come in to talk about various topics. “Guest speaker” sessions are typically 30 - 60 minutes long. You have access to a Smartboard and audio, if necessary. Topics may include, but are not limited to:
Please email me if you are interested in being a guest speaker and we will schedule a date a time for you to come visit the fourth grade! Grade 4 IXL Calendar

Now that we have established a lot of our routines, we are really getting into our learning.
ELA: Our question of the week is "Why do we want to explore new places?" The class read "On the Banks of Plum Creek" and responded to a writing prompt. We are learning all about traveling to new places. Math: We just wrapped up unit one on multiplication division: facts and meanings. The students took the test* on Wednesday and it went very well! We are starting our unit on generating and analyzing patterns. Check back here for periodic updates and information on what's going in on fourth grade! *Please allow 1-2 days for tests to be sent home. If your child receives a score below 70%, he/she will be given the opportunity to retake the test during after school hours. Hello Families! This is our very first blog post and we are very excited to tell you all about what has been going on in our class.
In writing, we have been working on persuasive/argument writing about the Carlsbad Caverns and if you would or would not like to go to the Carlsbad Caverns. We are also learning how to edit. In ELA, we are reading "Letters Home from Yosemite" and learning a lot about Yosemite. In math, we are doing a lot of DICE problems and reviewing place value. We are also getting our Unit 2 math scores back today! In social studies, we had a quiz on the regions and landmarks. In music class, we learned that Elephants Glow Because Donkeys Float (think notes). We just started using Class Dojo and we LOVE it! If the class gets to 2,000 we will get a fun reward. Don't forget to sign up if you haven't already. During the day when we need to get some energy out, we do Go Noodle. We are about to evolve our monster in Go Noodle and his name is Rad Chad. Every time we do a Go Noodle video, Rad Chad gets a point. When he reaches 10 points, he grows and changes. The class wants to say Happy Birthday to Mrs. Graham! Have a wonderful weekend! -Mrs. Graham's Class. |
